Tips for Using Your Garden Furniture

Patios and outdoor spaces are always a sight to behold especially when the weather is warm. They beckon you to come close and relax, rest, or just curl up on a seat over a good book.

When it comes to buying mordern garden furniture, there are a few crucial things you must bear in mind. Unlike indoor furniture, garden furniture will be exposed to weather variations like sunlight, humidity, and the occasional rain. In that regard, here are a few things you should always consider when using your garden furniture;

  1. The weather dictates everything; the durability of your garden furniture will depend very much on the weather. How hot and dry is the weather around you? Does it rain often? Needless to say, direct sunlight especially in summer will make most garden furniture fade or even splinter (especially for low quality wood). Powerful winds will knock over any plastic or aluminum furniture.
  2. Durability over style; when buying indoor home furniture, one can be excused for prioritizing style and aesthetics.  But when it comes to garden furniture, this is a long term investment. Garden furniture should be robust and able to withstand the weather variations. Thus, don’t be afraid of spending on high quality garden furniture made of the best wood.
  3. Cushions or no cushions? Cushions have their place and part in your garden furniture. They come in handy especially when you’re napping or curling outside on your garden furniture. Cushions also help protect the wood from direct exposure to sunlight or rain. However, cushions can hold a lot of dirt, germs and moisture if left outdoors over a period of time.
  4. Upholstery always works; the best way to acquire comfort and protection for your garden furniture is to have some upholstery. Leather upholstery or reinforced PVC plastic is perfect for cushioning the arm rest and head rest. The upholstery is durable, easier to clean, and quite resistant to outdoor weather exposures.
  5. Mobility; unless you’re buying fixed garden furniture pieces like a garden bench, the rest should be light and portable. There are times you’ll need to shift positions as the sun moves above the sky, and move with your garden seats and table. The heavier and bulkier the furniture, the more cumbersome it’ll be to move them around.  If your outdoor area has a really smooth floor, there are some modern garden furniture designs that have lockable/removable wheels. This helps move them around with so much ease.
  6. Watch out on the grass; we invest in making our grass and lawns look green and healthy. Some garden furniture especially that made of pine and other types of wood don’t go very well with direct exposure with moisture. Avoid using such furniture on your lawn as the moisture from the grass will make the wood rot. Even metal stands and feet will be corroded by exposure with the moisture. A plastic table and seat would be a better alternative if you have to pitch up tent on your grass.
